MAIN CHARACTERS

  • AETHELWYN is a tall, young warrior with bright red hair and beard. He wields a heavy war hammer and enjoys hunting over the responsibilities of a prince.
  • GWENN , named after the Celtic goddess of motherhood, is the only female commander in the Tharain army. She has short hair, an athletic build, and a broken nose.
  • HERMOD , named after the Nordic son of Odin, was the legendary hero of Cyllin but is now retired. Tall and strong with a streak of gray hair on the sides of his head, he reputedly defeated the dragon, Vipunen.
  • ISHUM , named after a Mesopotamian fallen god, is a veteran Ferfolk lieutenant, second in command to Quendrax.
  • KRONWULF is the powerful, middle-aged warrior-king who founded Seaton after a brief fight against Aethelred. Dark and moody, he wields a large battle-axe. Although bald, he has a thick black mustache and a deep scar on his chin.
  • OENGUS is the middle aged commander of the Zairn army and nephew of King Zairel. Short and muscular, he wears his hair long on one side of his head and shaved on the other.
  • OGMA , named after the Celtic god of language, is the only wizard to have mastered all seven schools of magic. Extremely old, he is short and hunched with a mass of wiry white hair.
  • QUENDRAX led the entire Ferfolk civilization out of the desert and into the human lands, starting the Great War.
  • NAMTAR , named after an evil Mesopotamian god, is a young, ambitious Ferfolk lieutenant. He shaves his head and has a tattoo of cross swords above his eyes.

MINOR CHARACTERS

  • AETHELRED , father of Aethelwyn, is a tall, stocky king with a thick red beard and mustache. He is Kronwulf's sworn enemy.
  • ARGUS is the mythical ancestor of Arboreals.
  • COLLITHAR , second in command to Gwenn, is a lieutenant in the Tharain army.
  • CYLLIN is the ruler of the western farming kingdom and an ally of King Tharain.
  • DIS is an archfiend in control of the first tier of the netherworld.
  • EMPIRAX is a strong Ferfolk warrior with long hair and tattoos. He frequently fights Loth for Namtar's attention.
  • FALGORAN is a young Arboreal warrior assigned as an ambassador to Zairn at the start of the Great War.
  • FENTHOS is the mythical ancestor of Ferfolk.
  • HEV , a Terun with slate gray whiskers on his chin and callused fingers, was assigned as an ambassador to Zairn. He reopened the vistrium mines with the heroes.
  • LASSINAR is the current Sorcerer on the Wizard Council.
  • LOTH is a young Ferfolk warrior with sword tattoos on his cheeks, often recruited for missions by Namtar.
  • MANDROS is the mythical ancestor of Humans.
  • MARDUL is a stout Ferfolk warrior with a bowl-shaped haircut.
  • MATHON , named after the Celtic god of sorcery, is a powerful Elementalist from Cyllin specializing in air and fire. He is one of the only people to escape the destruction of Cyllin by the Ferfolk invasion.
  • MELAN is an old farmer on Hermod's estate in Cyllin.
  • NITHDOL is the young knight from the Cyllin army who led the first attack against the Ferfolk army.
  • OBIDICUT is the archfiend second in command of first tier of netherworld. He is eight feet tall with jet black skin, orange eyes, jagged teeth, horns on forehead, and spikes on hands and back. He was trapped by Oengus in the Staff of Ogma.
  • RYQUILLAN was a Thaumaturgist on the Wizard Council and Ogma's first master.
  • SAPAS , named after a minor Phoenician deity, is an undistinguished Ferfolk lieutenant and frequent sparring partner of Quendrax.
  • SENFRA , self-proclaimed Knight of the Peasants, is the leader of a gang of bandits. He escaped Gwenn before the start of the Great War.
  • TESSUS is the mythical ancestor of Teruns.
  • THARAIN is the ruler of the central kingdom. He brought temporary peace to the land until the Great War against the Ferfolk.
  • WOLLAN is a captain in Zairn's army.
  • ZAIREL is the extremely old King of Zairn and a good friend of Ogma. He is building a wall of stone around his castle to protect the nobles that live nearby.

MISCELLANEOUS

  • ALCHEMY is the study of liquids and potions.
  • The ANXIAR is a wide river running along the southern border of human lands. It spills into the Great Ocean near Seaton.
  • ARBOREALS are a race of tree-dwellers from the tropics with pale green skin. They are polite, slow to make decisions, excellent climbers, and able to speak through nearly imperceptible facial expressions.
  • The ARBOREAL FOREST is an expansive forest covering the southern portion of the continent
  • A BLACK COD is a fish from the Cold Ocean.
  • A BLAECULF is an intelligent and aggressive canine, twice the size of a gray wolf, with a muscular body covered in black fur.
  • BROGA is a term that demons use to refer to themselves.
  • BRYMOR is a small village on the border between the desert and human lands. It was the first village to fall to the Ferfolk invasion.
  • The COLD OCEAN is a large body of water north of the continent.
  • CONJURATION is the study of imbuing everyday objects with special powers.
  • COUASTAL is a legendary village on the Great Ocean rumored to have been destroyed by a massive tornado.
  • DARK WHEY is a sticky, black substance made from bone powder and used by Necromancers.
  • The GUARDIANS OF DIS are tall, thin demons that have skin attached directly to their bones, exaggerated ribs, triangular head, beady eyes, and a chin spike. They ride reptilian mounts and ensure that spirits can never leave the city of Dis.
  • The GUARDIANS OF DARKNESS are seven feet tall with hunched backs, folds of rotting flesh on their overweight bodies, and a bulbous head full of fangs. They ensure that spirits do not move between the realm of darkness and the realm of walls.
  • The GUARDIANS OF THE PLAINS are rhino sized, reptilian demons with four legs of different sizes, beaked heads, and four black eyes.
  • The GUARDIANS OF THE RAIN are elephant-sized dog-shaped demons with brown matted fur, curved horns, and red eyes. They ensure that spirits do not move between the realm of darkness and the realm of rain.
  • The GUARDIANS OF THE RIVER wear black robes to cover their bony bodies. They have yellow eyes in a jawless skull and transport spirits across the Black River.
  • The GUARDIANS OF THE WALL look like a cross between a human and dragon with the head of a bull. They are ten feet tall and drool from loose flesh hanging near their mouths. They ensure that spirits do not move between realm of lost souls and realm of walls.
  • DESERT DOGS are large hunting dogs bred by Ferfolk in the wastelands.
  • DIS is a city in the first tier of the netherworld with oddly-angled buildings. The front gate is built from souls layered on top of one another.
  • An EARTH SPIRIT is a twelve foot tall, headless spirit composed of earth and rocks.
  • An EARTH WYRM is a species of dragon that lives beneath the mountains. its long body is covered by tough scales and has enormous mouth but tiny limbs.
  • ELEMENTAL MAGIC is the manipulation of air, earth, fire, and water.
  • A FAMILIAR is an animal that shares a special bond with a wizard. The familiar and its master can communicate through words, emotions, and sometimes thoughts.
  • The FERFOLK are leather-skinned warriors from the desert. They are resistant to the direct effects of magic.
  • A FOREST SPIRIT is a human-shaped spirit consisting of leaves, twigs, and dirt. It can grow larger as it picks up debris from the forest floor.
  • A FRACODIAN is a hairy, pug-faced cross between a human and a bear. Some are able to become berserk, gaining strength and speed for a limited time.
  • The GREAT OCEAN is a large body of water east of the continent.
  • ILLUSION is the study of disguise and deception.
  • KROFLUND is the largest town on the Sinewan River, halfway between Terun City and Zairn, with many extravagant inns.
  • LUCEVILLE is a tiny fishing village on the Cold Ocean, rumored to house thieves and assassins.
  • MOUNT THEROL is a tall mountain south of Terun City. Castle Tharain lies at the base of the mountain.
  • NECROMANCY is the study of death and the dead.
  • The PENSOREAN MOUNTAINS separate the human lands from the Cold Ocean east of Terun City. They are covered by white pine forests.
  • The RAZOR MOUNTAINS are the western half of the Pensorean Mountain Range. They are taller and rockier than the mountains east of Terun City.
  • A SABRETOOTH is a powerful feline predator with long fangs. Arboreals will occasionally tame sabretooths as attack cats against large targets.
  • SEATON is a port city on Anxiar Delta by Great Ocean. It is the second largest city in the land.
  • The SINEWAN RIVER flows from the Razor Mountains past Kroflund to Zairn.
  • A SKELETON is a set of bones animated by a Necromancer. It is able to wield weapons and obey simple commands.
  • SORCERY is the summoning and controlling of spirits.
  • The TERUNS are a race of mountain-dwellers. Short and manipulative, they are the masters of metal and stone.
  • TERUN CIty is the mountainside home of Terun traders, healers, and merchants. It is less prestigious than the Undercity but more impressive to outsiders.
  • THAUMATURGY is the study of blessings and miracles.
  • TRANSMUTATION is the transformation of one or more objects.
  • The UNDERCITY is the lower half of Terun City, located beneath the Tooth of the Gods.
  • VIPUNEN was vicious dragon that terrorized the northern reaches of Cyllin and the Razor Mountains. It was killed by a legion of soldiers led by Hermod.
  • VISTRIUM is a rare metal, prized by Teruns. It is stronger and lighter than steel but difficult to forge.
  • The WASTELANDS is a vast desert covering the central and western portion of the continent.
  • The WIZARD COUNCIL is a a gathering of master wizards, one from each school, to create and enforce the rules of magic.
  • ZAIRN is the oldest and largest city in the land. It is located where the Sinewan River spills into the Great Ocean and has been build in concentric rings separated by walls of stone.
